L.I.I.A.R Analysis of NME cover - John Lennon

This front cover is very simple so that it draws no attention away from John Lennon, he is such an important figure in the history of music and therefore people don't need a lot of convincing to pick up and buy this issue of NME. The denotation is him smoking, this often has the stereotype of being cool which of course he is! The teasers have a plus side to show what else this article will feature but also it shows that this issue is mainly about Lennon. The black and white connotes it been an old photo which evidently it is since it's an early photograph of him in the 60's. Black and white also gives a strong connotation of rock'n'roll and the colour red is like blood, which reinforces that he's dead. The anchorage ''30th Anniversary special'' indicates that this issue is paying tribute to the legend. The article teaser reads ''his genius, his demons, his final hours'' this is such a bold statement and is visibly seen in a sans serif font, it will draw people in because Lennon was a very intriguing charachter everyone wanted/wants to know about him, therefore they will buy this edition in the hope of getting just that! He is the most dominant image on the cover which illustrates and connotes how important he is. Above him is the iconographic bold + clear ''NME'' sign it is in a grey colour, again to not take any of the limelight off Mr Lennon. It also helps it fit in with the strong colour scheme of black, grey, white and red. The anchorage gives an explanation to why the image is so dominant. The barcode and price are hiding in the corner so all your attention is on John. All writing on the page is bold and clear so the consumer can see it effortlessley at first glance, however, all the writing is on the right side of the page. This is unconventional, usually it's on the left third so it's visible when sitting on the shelf in a shop. The audience for this specific edition of NME is fans of The Beatles and John Lennon,. this couldn't be more apparent from the layout to the masthead and picture! Usually on NME covers there are many thumbnail pictures of various other artists however they've kept it very simple as to not take away from John. The image is a direct image of him so it instantly connects with the audience and is a very powerful image for a tribute magazine. The ideology of this edition is that John is a huge (literally on the page) musician and should have a special tribute to him. Although the colour scheme looks grey it also looks slightly silver which links in with the idea of this been special.

L.I.I.A.R Analysis of NME front cover - The Horrors

The magazine title is short snappy and memorable it is 'NME' an abbreviation of 'new musical express' this indicates that the magazine will feature new bands, therefore the anchorage underneath reads ''How Britain's best band finally broke through'' this illustrates that they're a new 'hip' band in Britain. Over this is the title 'The Horrors' this is the most dominant piece of text on the page and therefore shows that this edition of NME is mainly about The Horrors, evidently this why the main image is of the band The Horrors. They are giving direct eye contact so that they connect with the audience of the magazine. They're dressed in black dark clothing which ties in with their name 'The Horrors' they conform to the Indie genre of stereotypically having longer hair and sixties influenced hairstyles. The iconography of this particular band 'The Horrors' is that they always have dark unique hairstyles, some even closely resembling Robert Smith from The Cure, this shows that old bands do seriously influence new modern ones. None of them are smiling which shows they are serious about the music that they produce which ties in with the idea of an 'Indie' band being more about their music than their look. The serious expressions on their faces also ties in with the piece of anchorage ''never comprimise'' which is a quotation of theirs referring on how they broke into the music scene and became a very successful British band. A white glowing light has been shone on their faces so they look bright, this shows and connotes that they're 'stars', it has come with their success in being 'Britain's best band'. The colour scheme of yellow that is used on the icon of 'NME' and on the writing 'THE HORRORS' also links in with them been stars, stars are the typically the colour yellow. Above the NME sign is a skyline advertisment and competition of winning tickets to Reading and Leeds festival, these entice people into buying the magazine and also make it look a lot more appealing. Underneath is a quotation of a teaser for a story featured in this issue ''it's going to be special'' it's a quote from Dave Grohl who has commented on the reissues of Nirvana's music. It is written in yellow, a pattern is starting to emerge of yellow writing been the teasers. Located at the bottom of the page are more teasers to make the magazine look more attractive for readers as they can read about their favourite new bands. Underneath these teasers are language techniques used to anchor the articles like ''meet his newest recruit''. To the left of these is the bar code to show the consumer the price and they can easily pay for the magazine, above this is the price so the customer is aware of how much the magazine is priced at. NME's audience age range is about 12-20 therefore it needs to be relatively cheap so that it's affordable. £2.40 is the price which it's retailed at.
The language used is one that teenage music fans buying the magazine will understand such as ''bands pay tribute''.  There are quotes also used in the language to excite the consumer such as ''Our new stuffs like Bowie'' NME hope that hope after reading this you're intrigued and buy this issue to find out in what aspect The Maccabees sound like David Bowie!
The ideology behind the magazine is that it's for teenagers. Girls will buy this edition to find out all about their favourite boy band The Horror's and see tour dates and read the latest news on them, however boys will buy it to find inspiration and look up to them. Anyone remotely interested in music and the British music scene are attracted to this magazine. They are stood tall and look 'fierce' therefore the ideology is also that they're a serious band, and are passionate about the music they create. The ideology has an impact on the audience, the audience is therefore teenagers. They're represented as successful band.

L.I.I.A.R Analysis of NME front cover - The Smiths


Morrissey's signature iconography and item associated with him are flowers, he used to wear them in his back pocket and therefore they are around the edge of the magazine. Everything else is in black and white because it's connoting that it's in the past, which evidently it is since this is a special edition celebrating the 20th anniversary of the successful Smiths album 'The Queen is dead''. The large dominant image is a medium close up of 'The Smiths' because they are the main feature in this issue, the image is a famous picture of them with the leader singer Morrissey more visible than the other members this is because he's the more well known member. Johnny Marr is also more dominant in the photograph because he's the second most well known. They are physically stood where they stand in the band. They're all giving direct eye contact because it connects with the consumer. This magazine like mine will show how older successful bands like The Smiths can inspire the bands of today, the teaser reads ''The making of a classic album. How it influenced a generation. Why I love The Smiths, by Oasis, Radiohead and Razorlight''. This gives a very clear indication of what will be featured inside if you purchase the NME and it's a teaser. 'NME' is very dominant on the page and is short and memorable, it stands out boldly on the page because it's in red, red gives the connotations of being passionate, the writers of NME are passionate about The Smiths; and if you are too, then buy this copy! There is a clear colour scheme of black, white and red. These colours are to illustrate that it's an old image (which it is). However the flowers on the page are colourful, this is because Morrissey always had bright flowers, they are associated with him. Language techniques such as ''SPECIAL'' give the impression that is a one off edition and therefore you should buy it and you want to buy it. There is a teaser for a competition ''WIN SMITHS AND MORRISSEY BACK LOGS'' this attracts the audience into purchasing the mag. It's in a bright clear font so it can be visible from the shelf and will stand out from all the other magazines. A small thumbnail of the album 'The Queen is dead'' is used on the front cover to convey what the anchorage is referring to. The anchorage ''The Queen is dead 20 yrs on'' is in a gold banner which links to the royal family or the Queen. Gold gives the connotations of being special which shows that this edition of NME really is amazing. But also the colour gold links to the Queen which is used in The Smiths album. In the right hand bottom corner are the price so it's clear the consumer how much the magazine will cost to buy. The age rang of buyers for NME are about 12-20 therefore the magazine needs to be fairly cheap so it's affordable, therefore it's a mere £2.40 which for the amount of information you get is justified. Located next to the price is the bar code so it can be easily scanned in at a large supermarket selling the magazine, you can effortlessly purchase a NME without having to go out of your way. The genre of the magazine is indie/rock/grunge/punk therefore they wouldn't feature bands such as ''Girls aloud''. Although the name of the magazine is 'new musical express' it will more often than not contain older bands, I believe this is because they have influenced so many bands of today, and play a major role in the lives of their generation and many more younger ones. On the image Morrissey looks pretty smug, which you would if you were the lead singer of The Smiths but as well he is well-known for being a smug character.
The ideology behind this edition of NME is of being a 'special' one for well known and appreciated band The Smiths. The Smiths are represented as been a prestigious band, this is noticeable fromt the way they're stood to the use of Gold dotted around the cover. The audience for NME is teenagers but also for this particular edition major Smiths fans!

Identifying target audience

My target audience is teenagers from the social group of 'Indies' and people who listen to alternative music. It's a niche audience as it's the individual side of music, however it's a growing trend therefore I think it would appeal to teenagers. To reach my target audience I think it will be important to include a lot of dark clothing as this connotes rebellion and rock and roll, this will appeal to them. Naturally I assume they will from the D-C2 social category due their age they won't as of yet be in a profession. Because my magazine is aimed at teenagers the aspect of rebellion will appeal to them as stereotypically that is the age at which you are trying to rebel against your parents. Therefore the colour scheme will also have to link in with that, I have chosen a black and white scheme for the front cover as it also in reinforces the idea of the bands and artists featured in the magazines as 'icons'. Images that I found on Google of 'icons' are mostly in the colours black and white. My target audience will look up to them.

All the images are black and white because typically this is the main colour scheme of rock bands and also helps to connotate that they are old bands which helps to tie in and connect the magazine to be about influences of old music and how they inspire todays musicians.

Language -

My magazine front cover will need a masthead which is memorable and short so that is is snappy. It will be a large dominant icon so it's easily noticed when you first glance at the magazine.
- A main image using a medium close up with a direct eye contact it will capture the audience.
- A clear and bright colour scheme that has connotations of the genre the magazine is for.
- Thumbnail images of the other articles featured in the magazine
- Anchorage to entice you into buying the magazine
- Price and bar code so you can clearly see how much it is to purchase
- Teasers of the contents inside
- Competitions and gifts make the magazine more attractive to a buyer
- The main article will relate to the image otherwise it would be just a random image with no purpose

Institution - A magazine will be more successful if there is a gap in the market for it. I believe there is a gap in the market for the magazine I'm going to produce. However it will only be a success if people want that gap to be filled!

Ideology - I intend the message of my magazine to be one of good music and the roots it comes from and what inspires young and fresh musicians. Therefore I believe that my target audience will purchase the magazine in hope for some inspiration for themselves as well as the latest news and inside interviews with the bands featured. The values that I hope the magazine will promote is the appreciation of good music without it having to be acknowledged through places in the charts!

Audience - The target audience are young teenagers and people in their early 20's interested in music and gigs.

Representation -
I intend to represent the bands as being inspiring and succesful in what they do. However I also intend to show their lifestyle in a typical (grunge/rock) way. Stereotypically this will require dark colours and long hair cuts..

L.I.I.A.R Analysis and evaluation of my final contents page

Language like 'boost', 'exclusive' and 'ultimate' are used to make the contents of the magazine seem to be better than other magazines and draw you into wanting to buy the magazine so you can read these stories. They are articles that are to do with the college, not just random ones, this is because the target audience's are youth's of the college. The ideology is that it's a college where you can enjoy yourself, shown through the image of a smiling youth who attends the college. The audience are the students and perhaps teachers of the college, illustrated through images and articles that they can relate to. The magazine is represented as being sophisticated and hard working. The image used has flowers in the background which shows it's a happy and pleasant environment.

The language used it one that is understandable for students of the college and includes things they can relate to. Words like 'exclusive' and 'free' make the magazine appealing and entice you into purchasing it. You feel as if you're getting more for your money and it fights off other competitive magazines. The ideology of the magazine is that it's a fun, happy and multi-cultural one, this is done through the use of image which shows two smiling girls of different ethnicity's. However the idea that it's a place where you can enjoy yourself is also linked to the idea of working hard, the books and folders shown in the picture connote this. Both encapsulated together make it a hard working content college, with a bright working environment. The blazing background behind her shows she has a 'bright future ahead of her' and also connotes she's feeling happy. The institution is the students of the college, this is illustrated through the skyline, reading ''your exclusive look into what's going on in Wyke College'', which the customer of course perceives that someone from the college created the magazine. The audience is apparent from various things on the front cover of the magazine. The first one is the youthful girls in the picture inside college grounds, this exhibits they're from the college and straight away sets a clear target audience of who should be buying this magazine. Secondly the articles featured are those of which would only appeal to youths who attend college such as ''getting the most from your NUS Card''. A stereotypical feature of a student is that they need cheap prices, therefore the magazine is priced at just £1.99 which is situated above the bar code (necessary for a magazine). The college is represented as being a brilliant college and a lovely place to be, through use of bright images and attractive articles.
The colour scheme of the college is a dark purple and white, therefore the colour scheme on the magazine are these colours, it links the two together. The writing 'knowledge' is in a serif writing to make it look sophisticated and intelligent which ties in with the idea of a hard working college.

Contents page conventions

''Inside this week'' is another way of saying ''Contents'' so this page is primarily for saying what stories are featured inside the magazine. However it can also be used for internal and external advertisements. Such as the internal one ''..just £74.99 for the year..''.  Quotations from articles are often used to entice you into reading it, an example would be ''This is beyond fandom, this is worship - My Chemical Romance''. Stereotypically of the contents page is the features section, a list of story titles and reference to the location of these articles. Images of the bands are used to indicate the people featured. Large font so everything is easy to read at first glance.

''Language'' - Technical music terms are used that make the reader feel as though this magazine is knowledgeable and worthy of their purchase. It also makes the magazine seem appealing and relatable and as though you're part of it.

''Ideology'' - It states that it's ''the world's biggest and best music guide'' this entices a reader to buy it and make it seems a cut above the rest of the industry's music magazines.

''Institution'' - The people who make the magazine are people with a great knowledge of music and the bands featured inside the mag. This is apparent with the line ''OASIS SPECIAL''.

''Representation'' - It's represented as being a 'cool' magazine, the guy in the picture is wearing sun glasses which has the connotation of being cool and they are posed like a 'hip' band that you want to read about.

Planning and development..

Now knowing my needs for the magazine here are my initial ideas for the magazine..

It will feature three stories regarding issues and stories within Wyke college:
- Three ways to boost your UCAS Points!
- Finding the right enrichment course for you
- The ultimate way to relax during your half term holidays!

It was also feature a picture that it relatable to the target audience of College Students e.g
- A student from Wyke
- An area of Wyke
- Something study related.

Something to entice the students to buy the magazine because it benefits them:
- Selling your old AS Books to the new students
- Free University courses booklet included
- Getting the full use of your NUS Card

It will include a kicker which is stereotypical of magazines.
It will have a bar code as these are compulsory for all magazines and the price will be listed next to so the consumer is aware of how much they are paying for the it.
The skyline will say ''your exclusive look into what's going on in Wyke college''
Underneath this it will read ''Wyke Knowledge'' which is a play on words which makes it slightly more appealing and fun to young college students however still connotes that it is a useful magazine.
The date needs to be on the cover to make the customers aware when the magazine was released.
